Your Leader in Labiaplasty Surgery

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reduce the size of the lips of the vulva, known as the inner labia (minora) and outer labia (majora). There are two pairs of inner labia: the lower pair that inserts into the clitoris; and the upper pair, called the prepuce, that form the hood and can enter into and distort the lower pair. For optimal results, this upper pair often needs to be reduced to free up the lower pair.

Women may choose to have labiaplasty for a variety of reasons, including aesthetic purposes, reducing discomfort from excess tissue, or restoring the appearance of their vulva after childbirth. Dr. Scheinberg is one of the most experienced and reputable labiaplasty surgeons in Florida and the world, having served thousands of women. Common Labiaplasty Procedures

Just as every woman is unique, so is every labiaplasty procedure. Though labiaplasty is often only thought of as the reduction of the labia minora, or the inner lips of the vulva, there are actually many different types of labiaplasty procedures. The most common include:

  • Labia Minora Reduction: This procedure reduces the size and shape of the labia minora, most often to reduce protrusion, asymmetry, or discomfort. Though there are ten different methods for labia minora surgery, more than half of them produce noticeable horizontal scars. At The Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Gynecology, we believe that the best aesthetic results can only be achieved by considering the entire area surrounding the labia.
  • Reduction of Excess Prepuce: This procedure removes excess skin along the sides of the clitoris, also known as the prepuce, which helps to provide an aesthetically pleasing look. It frequently interferes with and distorts the labia minora and is often performed alongside a labia minora reduction.
  • Labia Majora Reduction: The labia majora are the larger outer lips of the vulva. Over time or after childbirth, the labia majora can become thin, saggy, or asymmetrical. This procedure removes excess tissue, which can help to provide a more youthful look.
  • Hymenoplasty: This procedure reconstructs or repairs the hymen, which is a thin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. Hymenoplasty is typically performed for cultural, social, or religious reasons. At The Center For Cosmetic & Reconstructive Gynecology, we understand the sensitive nature of this procedure and strive to provide a comfortable and safe environment for our patients.
  • Combination Labiaplasty Procedures: The above procedures can be combined in a single surgical session, or combined with vaginal reconstruction to achieve overall vaginal rejuvenation.

Additionally, Dr. Scheinberg employs seven key principles to help patients achieve the natural appearance and comfort they desire:

  • Contour: The resulting shape should be both smooth and visually appealing.
  • Color: The skin tone should be even, match on both sides and have no dark patches.
  • Symmetry: Both sides should be even and identical in appearance.
  • Size: For both aesthetic and comfort reasons, many women prefer the size of the inner labia to be smaller than that of the outer labia.
  • Smooth Edges: The labia should have smooth borders.
  • Hidden Suture Lines: All sutures should be hidden within the inner labia and not visible to the eye.
  • Preservation of Blood Supply: Maintaining the blood supply to the tissue is important for optimum healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is labiaplasty painful?

For most labiaplasty procedures, the patient will be under general anesthesia, meaning that they will remain asleep and comfortable during the entire process. Incredibly, our patients typically report only minimal discomfort as they recover. Our team does everything in our power to ensure your comfort and minimize pain before, during, and after the procedure.

What is the recovery like? How long will I have to wait to have sex?

Because each patient and procedure are unique, recovery times for labiaplasty vary. Generally, we ask that patients refrain from any heavy physical activity, like exercising or lifting heavy objects, for several weeks following the surgery. However, our patients are typically comfortable returning to work within 3 to 7 days of their procedure.

Additionally, while we understand that many of our patients seek out labiaplasty in an effort to improve their sex lives, we still recommend that patients wait at least 6 weeks before engaging in intercourse. By doing so, you give your body the time to heal, prevent any potential complications, and ensure the best results.

What's the difference between labiaplasty and vaginoplasty?

Labiaplasty focuses on the labia, or the outer parts, while vaginal reconstruction, colloquially known as vaginoplasty, focuses on the vagina, or the inner parts.
